Printed Electronics: Too good to be true? Reflections from the OE-A Workshop in Frankfurt

21/05/2025

Printed electronics promise to revolutionize the field — with flexible, lightweight, and potentially biodegradable components that align with a more responsible future. But how much of that promise is already real, and how much is still aspirational?

That was the central question tackled by our project coordinator, Corne Rentrop, during a Provoquium at the recent OE-A (Organic and Printed Electronics Association) workshop in Frankfurt.

In a session designed to challenge assumptions and spark critical dialogue, Corne examined both the breakthroughs and the bottlenecks in the printed electronics field. From material limitations to scaling challenges, and from impressive pilot successes to the realities of commercial adoption, the discussion was a welcome deep dive into what’s truly working — and what still needs work.

The workshop brought together voices from across industry and research, creating space not just for showcasing progress but for acknowledging complexity. As printed electronics move from lab-scale innovation to market relevance, conversations like these are vital.

We’re proud to be part of a community that asks hard questions, pushes for transparency, and aims for real impact — not just elegant prototypes.
